I have finally found a bulletproof homemade bug spray that wards off pests like no other. The best part is that it’s homemade, deet free, and all together chemical free. I had tried making my own bug spray last summer, but nothing I made worked well enough to keep the mosquitoes completely away. Not only was I not succeeding in making my own, I couldn’t buy a natural/chemical free repellent that actually kept me bite free either.
I still have another natural homemade bug spray that I would like to make using what we have growing in the garden, but for now, I am over the moon for this repellent. My mom actually made this new bug spray for me while she was visiting last weekend. Thanks to her involvement with an essential oil company, Young Living, we have gotten to easily explore a plethora of oils. We have a solid handful or two of oils in our medicine cabinets, but my mom’s collection takes the cake. I’m certain she has added to what she has since this picture was taken.
I fully credit Young Living for my mosquito free week. I’m usually covered in a sickly amount of bites. Mosquitoes have been known to push me out of the garden a time or two. Since using this spray, my legs have had a chance to clear up and start to look bug-bite free. As a mosquito magnet herself, my mom couldn’t wait to share with me what Young Living had shared with her.
Bulletproof bug spray – Young Living recipe
- 4 ounces of Witch Hazel
- 6 drops lavender oil
- 4 drops thieves oil
- 12 drops purification oil
- 8 drops peppermint oil
.Mix all the ingredients in a 4 oz or larger spray bottle.
.To apply, just give the bottle a little shake and spray all the necessary areas.
The bug spray my mom made me was created using all Young Living oils, so I can’t attest to the strength of alternative essential oil brands. I buy a range of brands for our essential oils, but my mom swears by Young Living. She says there is no other brand that presses their oils like they do.
The all-star of this killer spray has got to be the purification oil (a blend of lemongrass, citronella, rosemary, lavender, myrtle, and tea tree essential oils). Pretty much it’s made of sugar and spice and
everything nice everything little bugs hate.
So while I wait for my lavender to flower in the herb bed, I will be pest free, deet free, gloriously mosquito bite free using this bug spray. And if anyone has a homemade bug spray they swear by, we’d love to hear! You never know what ingredients you already have around your home that can keep you bite free!
psst- looking to aid those summer bites, or even just something to eliminate the itch? Try the comfrey salve we made here. We are completely hooked.
