Oil pulling, it’s all the craze these days, and you might want to jump on the bandwagon too. It only takes twenty minutes and the benefits seem to be countless. Swishing coconut oil in your mouth for twenty minutes might be one of the best habits to ever form.
Just to name a few benefits:
- Whiter smile
- Healthier gums
- Alleviates bad breath
- Pulls out harmful bacteria and fungus
- Better sleep
- Decreased headaches
- Clearer skin
- Actually strengthens teeth, gums, and jaw
- Prevents cavities and gingivitis
- Increased energy
- Alleviate allergies (perfect for this time of the year)
Once we learned what this was and how amazing it was it for oral health, it was impossible to hold us back. When we first started oil pulling, we used LouAna brand coconut oil. I found it challenging due to its consistency, which is strange because between the two of us Ryan has a larger texture issue. He was kind enough to capture my reaction to our first pull.
It was thick and chunky. I would just hold it in my mouth until it would start to melt. Ryan chewed it (gag). He said it better got in between his teeth (to each his own). When it was time to restock on coconut oil, we bought Trader Joe’s brand (queue the singing angels). Unlike the first kind, it actually tastes like coconut and the consistency was much smoother.
To oil pull like a pro, scoop 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and swish it around in your mouth for twenty minutes just like mouthwash. It’s important not to exceed twenty minutes. When the time is up, we step outside to spit. If outside isn’t an option for you, the trashcan works just as well. It’s important to not spit down the drain because it could potentially clog it up. You’ll notice when you finish that it’s milky white from all the toxins and bacteria. Because it’s full of all that junk, you want to make sure not to swallow any. (One time, I coughed in the middle of it and had a mini panic attack when I accidentally swallowed a tiny bit, but i survived.) Rinse well with water when you’re done.
We have been at this for a few months now and have both noticed a number of positive effects… and I no longer make that terrible face. It’s actually become an enjoyable experience and something we look forward to.
Anyone else trying this trend that’s actually been around for ages? Do you have a favorite coconut oil?
