Our garden seeds might have just been sown, but the excitement for the harvest is already building. We have spent the winter perusing cookbooks, Pinterest, and all kinds of wonderful blogs getting ideas about what to do with the coming harvest. One thing is for sure, we have lots of pickles in our near future.

For a great pickle, it’s important to have very flavorful spices with just the right zing. We tried out a number of different pickling spice mixes but never fell in love. All roads seemed to be leading to trying out our own mix. Inspired by a number of different recipes, we set out to create our own homemade pickling spice mix.

2 tbsp whole allspice
3 tbsp black peppercorns
3-4 medium sized cinnamon sticks cut into small pieces
1 tbsp whole cloves
2 tbsp whole coriander
3 tbsp dill seeds
1 tbsp fennel seeds
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
3 tbsp yellow mustard seeds

Cut up the cinnamon sticks. Use a sharp knife or pair of kitchen scissors to do the deed.

Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well.


Store in a tightly sealed jar or container in a dark, cool place until ready to use.


To use, just wrap the amount needed in a cheesecloth bag and tie tightly.

We have a long list of pickles to try out this year, and this homemade pickling spice mix is going to give us the edge we needed. Get ready for one tasty summer.
